the korean story of the little mermaid is that she must kill the prince in order to be human, and instead in the end, she loves him too much and kills herself instead.
Actually that’s basically the original story, and not just the korean one:
The prince married another woman and the little mermaid, brokenhearted, waited for death to claim her at the arrival of dawn (she would die and become sea foam by the first dawn following the prince’s wedding if she was not his bride). Her sisters showed up then with a dagger they had received from the witch in exchange of their beautiful long locks of hair; if she killed the prince with it and let his blood drip on her feet before dawn, she’d become a mermaid again and be able to return to her kin.
The little mermaid went into the couple’s bedroom where they were sleeping but in the end couldn’t do it. At the break of dawn she threw herself into the sea and her body became foam but instead of disappearing she became a spirit - a daughter of the air.
